About Rebecca Stirling

Geology & Glaciology Presenter

Rebecca is a glacial geologist with degrees from Vancouver Island University and the University of Waterloo. Her Master's research focused on glacial geomorphology and geochemistry in the Northwest Territories, Canada.
Rebecca loves diverse landscapes and started her career as a silviculturist in the temperate rainforests of coastal British Columbia and Haida Gwaii. Eventually, her love of rocks drew her to mineral exploration in BC's copper and gold fields and the Northwest Territories' diamond fields.
Life has taken her to the glacially sculpted granitoids north of Seoul and the fjords of the Canadian west coast; the sedimentary strata of the US southwest; and the active and extinct volcanoes of Hawaii, the Cascade arc, and the Caribbean. While fascinated by Earth systems, she is passionate about sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Rebecca delivered earth science and expedition-leadership field school courses for Universities across Canada and gave technical talks and award-winning speeches across Canada. She guided guests through rare ecosystems in the Great Bear Rainforest and shared detailed knowledge about marine mammals gained while serving on a humpback whale research team in the Salish Sea.
Between expeditions, Rebecca spends time paddling among the southern Gulf Islands, hiking in the temperate rainforest, and flying around the southwestern BC coast. Rebecca is delighted to share in adventures with everyone wonderstruck by our breathtaking Polar Regions.
