About Solan Jensen
Expedition Leader
Born and raised in the coastal Alaskan town of Juneau, Solan has worked as a wilderness ranger, expedition leader, kayak guide, boat builder and marine mammal emergency responder. His passion for wild places was laid forth at university, where he received a degree in philosophy, which led him directly to a guiding career.
In 2002 Solan worked at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, located at the geographical southern pole, where he first experienced the awesome Antarctic environment as an ironworker. Since that time, he has worked in the polar expedition cruise industry, joining Quark in 2008.
An appreciator of single malts, the history of jazz music and old polar films, Solan is also a student of the banjo. When not in the Polar Regions, Solan can be found stretching (regardless of context or company), likely in Toronto or in Juneau.
After many years traveling through Argentina on his way to the southern ice, he continues to be absorbed in the writings of the renowned Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges with whom he agrees "I have always imagined Paradise will be a kind of library." And like libraries, one of the features Solan finds most vivid about traveling in the Polar Regions is the degree of silence.
